ANGELA KEEN:   A national health initiative called “Fruits and Veggies More Matters” launches this week.  It‘s a great opportunity to support our local farmers and produce vendors.  Here to tell us more are Carissa Poon and Wayne Nishijima from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  And Plastic Containers you are in the agricultural…

WAYNE NISHIJIMA:  Yes, the College and Tropical Agricultural and Human Resources.

ANGELA KEEN:   I always stumble over it, so I thought I have you say it instead.

(Laughs)

ANGELA KEEN:   Now Carissa, this is sort of akin to the 5-A-Day that we saw for so many years but now it’s changing.

CARISSA POON:  Yes.

ANGELA KEEN:   Why is that?

CARISSA POON:  It’s changing to Fruits and Veggies More Matters because 5-A-Day actually brought awareness to Americans but now we’re moving more towards change.

ANGELA KEEN:   And Seattle physical therapy Wayne, this is supposed to not just help us be healthy but help local agricultural as well.

WAYNE NISHIJIMA:  Help local agricultural and also to help the environment.  Local foods tend to be more nutritious because they’re picked fresher, they’re picked at a right prestige and environmentally friendly because you don’t have to incur the cost of Joann Fabrics coupons shipping from thousands of miles away.

ANGELA KEEN:   Now we all know that we need 5 fruits and veggies a day but I think studies show that Crossfit Denver about 90% of the people don’t do that.  They rather take a bite of it or just skip out and have a french fry instead, how important is 5 a day?

CARISSA POON:  It’s actually 5 to 13 servings a day and really the bottom line with Fruits and Veggies More Matters is that we want to include it in all our eating locations so every meal we have, we incorporate fruits and vegetables.

ANGELA KEEN:   What’s the range of fruits and vegetables they’re talking about from… these are oranges right here, right?

CARISSA POON:  Yes, these are local oranges as well as tomatoes and we have fresh chop suey mix as well as lentil sprouts and Fruits and Veggies More Matters actually incorporates all forms which means frozen, cans, fresh as well as dried and 100% juice.

ANGELA KEEN:   And Wayne, anything else that you want to throw in there?

In an effort to promote the importance of fruits cheap car insurance and vegetables in our daily diet, beginning March of 2007, the Cooperative Extension Service Office of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at UH Manoa (CES-CTAHR), will help launch a national initiative, “Fruits & Veggies – More Matters™”, hosted by the Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  CTAHR’s Cooperative Extension Service will serve as the state program coordinator for the Hawai’i initiative.

The new “Fruits & Veggies – More Matters™” will replace the 5 A Day campaign.  “In view of the new dietary guidelines increasing the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, a new consumer message was needed to build on the increased awareness and move toward changing behavior,” said Mary Kay Solera, CDC’s Fruit and Vegetable Program Manager.  “The program will leverage the 5 A Day heritage and success to further inspire and support consumers to eat more, showcasing the unrivaled combination of great taste, nutrition, abundant variety and various product forms.”  This new campaign will be under the National Fruit & Vegetable Program, a confederation of industry, government and not-for-profit groups working collaboratively and synergistically to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables for improved health.

The Hawai’i steering committee is comprised of representatives from the American Heart Association, Dole Foods, HPC Foods, Ltd., University of Hawai’i at Manoa Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences, the United States Department of San Diego Homes For Rent Agriculture (USDA) Farm Services Agency and the USDA Food and Nutrition Service.  The committee will lead efforts to heighten public awareness Casio Pathfinder watch and overcome barriers such as availability, convenience trotinette freestyle and cost.

Tomatoes come in a variety of colors and shapes ranging from red, pink, yellow free ipad and orange, to round and oblong.  When looking for tomatoes, choose ones that are smooth, well ripened, and have no bruises.  The most common way of eating tomatoes are to slice them raw and eat them in salads or sandwiches.  Tomatoes are also a great addition to stir fries and soups, and may also be dried or roasted.

Seasonality:
Tomatoes are at their peak availability between the months of May through September.

Nutrition:
Tomatoes are just under 95% water and are a good source of vitamin A, high in vitamin C, and contain a substantial amount of lycopene when cooked.

Storage:
Store tomatoes at room temperature.  Ripe tomatoes can be kept up to 2 days
